View Full Version : Midi for Bukas Palad Songs

Our choir has long been singing your songs.
We are aware that music sheets have not been published for some songs, e.g. Tinapay ng Buhay English Mass songs, Tubig ng Buhay (included in Tinapay ng Buhay CD) Umawit Kayo (included in Hangad CD).
With the popularity Yamaha Electone models with diskettes, may we suggest that you provide Midi files on CDs for your songs (like a minus one) which we can use during Mass. We suggest that it be Midi format because it is easier to convert Midi files to audio or MP3 format than vice versa.
In so doing we will be able to sing your songs even in the absence of the organist or guitarist.
More power to your group.
Ellen :)
Hi
That is a great suggestion. But I don't know if Carlo and the other musicians of Bukas Palad can handle that work right now. Fortunately, Jescom is selling minus-one tapes of the Best of Bukas Palad Vol's. 1 & 2. You can buy them at Sonolux and JMM.
God Bless!

Jason,
Wala bang CD Version yung the best of BP 1& 2, mahirap kasi sa tape lang dahil kung practice madalas e paulit-ulit diba? Baka masira agad yung tape. Plano ko nga i-audio capture yung minus one and burn sa CD para mas maganda (for personal use syempre)
Isa pa mas maganda pag CD kasi if you need to jump from one song to another diba, mas mabilis.
Cheers
Welcome nga pala Ellen... ;D

Thanks guys ... ;)
I know you are busy. Inasmuch as the minus one tape for Tinapay ng Buhay is also not available, then perhaps we can request for chords of the songs not included in the Tinapay ng Buhay songbook Vol. 1 so our organist can create a diskette output on the organ.
Hi Alex,
I am not really sure about the CD version of the minus-ones. I suggest you check-out Jescom's website or call them if they have CD versions.
For Ellen,
Check out the other posts in the instrumentalists forum. Norman and Palan provided some chords for some songs.. i'm sure they can provide you with the chords that you need once they are available to accomodate your requests.
God Bless!
Hi Jason! Kumusta?
Anyway, back to topic. As of now, the minus ones are available only as cassette tapes. I think this is because they have a very limited market, and are intended mainly for practice, rather than for replacing instrumentalists during Mass. (I think most liturgists discourage using canned music during the Mass.)

(I think most liturgists discourage using canned music during the Mass.)
You're right. The head of liturgical music in our diocese discourage using 'canned' music during the Mass kasi there are times when the priest would change or delete some parts in the Mass (like singing the 'Maawa Ka'). I've encountered kasi a tape recording where they had a minus one version of all Mass songs in order from Processional to Recessional.
For example, paano kung kailang i-cut short yung communion song, or i-extend for that matter? That would not be possible when using recorded music. ::)
Mas okay talaga yung may instrumentalist. ;)
mas maganda nga na may instrumentalist.
eh pano kung wala.
the choir i recently joined had been using MIDI files for 2 years b4 i came across them, and were doing pretty well....
putting out general MIDI files is pretty good idea.
i can't help tho, kasi wala akong keyboard na maganda ngayon.....

Thanks :)
Hello there! I'm new so please bear with me. :D
I think putting up MIDI files of BP songs is a great idea. Kahit bayaran pa kasi I know the effort it takes to produce one.
Last holy week, someone asked me a favor to make a midi file of "Mahiwaga" (Mahiwaga ang buhay ng tao...). It took me half a day to come up with only 4 tracks. That may be because I'm still new at making midis. But imagine laying down 16 tracks...
Anyway, i play the synth/piano and flute in my little subdivision choir but I prefer to play the flute. It will really be great if I just hook up my synth to a laptop, let the midi file play while I wail away with my flute. We don't have a second pianist/organist kasi but we have a guitarist pero kapag wala siya hindi na ako maka-flute.
Anyway again, there are some midi files in the dwtl website. Some of them are not BP but they can help.

saang website yung dwtl?

I've already done a quite a collection of English and Tagalog MIDI using a Korg i30 synth, which we use in our parish. Many are Bukas Palad songs. I never had any formal music education, though, hilig lang talaga. What I do is listen to the tapes, then painstakingly make 'himay' every instrument. Takes a lot of patience, time and effort but the results are quite close to the original instrumentation.
I hope Bukas Palad also comes out with complete instrument scores. Or if you have them already, pwede ba mangopya? Thanks, God Bless, more power to everyone!
Welcome Archer sa BP Forum.
Pwede ba ako makahingi ng mga midi files mo? pwede mo ito i-upload sa yahoo briefcase using this acoount:
username: bponliners
password: bukaspalad
Thanks

No problem, bro. But how come my files sound different when played in the computer? Like yung strings nagiging tunog flute, or yung drums nagiging strings. The same with files that I downloaded - when played on my Korg some tracks seemed out of tune and I had to change instrument assignments to make them sound right. Anyone please enlighten me on this?

MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) is a standard of sending information . . . not really sound itself. General MIDI, the most common format used, is the standard of the listing of instruments (0 -127) and channels (1-16). Again, these are merely "assignments" and not sound per se. The sound varies depending on which hardware is playing it. It sounds differently on computers precisely cuz more often than not, computers have different sound cards. And different cards implement sounds differently. Same goes with keyboards/workstations . . . a Roland has better sounding pianos than Korgs, but korgs have better drums. but they are all usually based on the same 0-127 instrument assignments.
Sa case mo naman sa out of pitch, sometimes meron din SysEx commands (SYStem EXclusive. . . or commands specific to certain hardware) say like if you composed a song using a roland, then save even the sysex commands then mas madali mareplicate yung tunog sa mga ibang roland na kapareho na model mo. Or maybe the MIDI was saved but using a nonstandard setting sa hardware. Like Korgs kunwari. . . I used a Trinity before ang 0 isn't grand piano (but that swirly sounding combination of instruments), and their drums are channel independent (as against GMs channel 10 reserved for drums). So maybe meron hardware na yung drum set was kunwari . . . instrument 57, channel 1 siya. Then if you play it sa standard scard (na GM based, then that 57 will NEVER play as drums, but kung ano yung 57 sa GM). Likewise sa GM settings, put it on channel 10 and regardless ano instrument gamitin mo, drums lalabas (iiba lang yung set like brush kit, jazz, kit, or whatever approved sa GM)
Meron din of course cases na ginawa totally sa ibang instrument kse the soundcard sounded better with that. Example is when meron ako acoustic guitar line na gus2 gawin tas pangit pa soundcard ko (at walang live guitar na marerecord) . . . the "harp" sometimes sounded more like a guitar than the "acoustic guitar" listed sa GM Instruments ng scard ko.
Sometimes naman meron mga special cases . . . like creative cards which you can assign soundfonts na in different banks and instrument numbers so you can REPLACE eveything na. Sa DWTL yung Kaibigan Song .mid doon na gawa namin ng friend ko is a perfect example of that. Sablay siya lagi tumugtog sa normal pc (well of course it will play, but it never does the song justice), kse I made a soundfont specifically for that song. . . so the only way to listen to it na matino is pag niload mo yung soundfont. . . but again not everyone has creative cards (and i personally dont use creative anymore)
Suffice to say, there are a LOT of nuances sa world of MIDI, though very simple concept, it's very powerful when you know how to manipulate it . . . that's why it's been around for so long =) But usually naman kung GM (general midi) dapat basic lang (e.g. 16 channels [channel 10 reserved for drums/percussion] using any of 128 instruments assigned sa General MIDI (or sometimes GS instruments since Roland me sariling standards na rin na naimplement) na walang extra stuff.
The real use for midi for me, is to get the NOTES and not the sound (so scoring, etc. MIDI is very useful).

Carlo, one time nag e-mail ako kay Palan, he was mentioning then that he will request na magkaroon ng download section kasi I asked him kung pwede nga i-convert yung mga sibelius files to MIDI at pwede daw. Tulad mo rin mas madali ang pag-aaral ng notes (for voices) kung naka MIDI and the same time, magiging maganda para sa mga choirs na walang instrumentalist (original pa ang trax diba ?)
Paki tanong naman kay Palan please. Thanks ;D

Hmmm, it would be easier for everyone to print straight to PDF format. Ang only problem (na unconfirmed) if mabubuksan ko Sibelius file niya (kse Mac ata gamit niya) sa PC ko (with the same program) . . . mukhang me chance na pede if Sibelius followed suite sa compatibility like Adobe, or Microsoft na, as long as same program, kaya buksan regardless of platform. But of course, MS Office files palang yung naveverify ko with my own two eyes na pede mabuksan on both platforms.

A Gift Of Love" pang christmas ho yong kanta.
Hi nilo!

Hi Everyone,
I've been arranging Mass songs using PSR-2000 then saved it as midi format. Yes, it's a great idea! i've been doing this for two years now, you just have to play each recorded songs during the Mass like a minus-one. One thing is, i can convert all the midi to mp3...i can use any mp3 player(palm or pocket pc) to play all the songs, i don't have to bring the keyboard all the time(its weight is 10 kg, whew!), i just have to plug the mp3 player into the clavinova or portatone organ with stereo input jacks then the songs or rather mp3 player will just play like a keyboard.
If you want to know the details...email me here: ambience28@yahoo.com

Bien

Hi Bien,
Paki PM lang ang email address mo. I am interested to get your services. Thanks :).
Hello,
Few people has been asking how to convert midi to mp3.
These are the items you need to be able to do it.
1. Yamaha PSR-2000 work-station keyboard or any keyboard that has multi-
tracks or that can make song arrangement.
2. PC with sound card(audio-in) and with multi media of course.
3. Stereo cable
4. Software
The most tedious activity here is the arrangement of a particular song, iyong lahat ng mga ginagawa ko ay pang Mass songs lang. The idea is, after mong makapag midi program or arranged ng isang song, you have to record it via PC(and software) then after you have playback & recorded the song, the software will either ask you to export or convert the file into mp3, wave, ogg vorbis sound format. Then yun na iyon.
Most of the time ay dala ko na lang iyong Palm ko with mp3 player and stereo cable(RCA ata yun) and mono jacks. I-insert ko lang ito via our parish clavinova or portatone organ then let it play like a minus-one.
Ang advantage kasi nito ay...
1. You can also join the choir while singing.
2. Less error on the part of the musician, or pag di available iyong misician during the Mass.
3. Iyong song ay already arranged na, it will play like a band ika nga.
4. Lively iyong song, depending on the arrangement and song itself.
My email is ambience28@yahoo.com if you have any question.
Regards to all,
Bien
Hello po sa lahat...
Thanks nga pala sa moderator dun sa yahoo groups sa pag accept sa kin as a member.
My very own arrangements of Mass Songs. Pls check na lang.
Thanks & Regards,
Bien :)

Eto bro...
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bponliners
By the way, i know madaming professionals here na alam on how to convert the midi to another sound format...cakewalk software is one.
Try to use Cakewalk, it uses a virtual musical instrument, may selection dun ng different instrument that can replace iyong ginamit sa midi. By the way, makapag produce ka lang ng midi from a piano keyboard, the sound file format from the keyboard is midi, pede mo ito i-save sa diskette if capable iyong keyboard to save a file or pede din direct sa pc using midi cable. Iyong mga midi file na nasa briefcase dati na nawala or iyong midi file na nasa yahoo groups were programmed first from a keyboard, high end keyboard nga lang ito like Roland, Korg and Yamaha na pedeng i-save iyong ginawa mo sa diskette or MMC or USE flash drive. Pede mo ito i-play sa pc pero it will only recognize or use iyong default sound generator ng normal pc, tunog ringtone lang ito or polyphonic ika nga pag pinatugtog mo. You need a software like Cakewalk to be able to hear iyong original sound from the keyboard pag ni-play mo sa pc. You can try Finale software also, it was mentioned na ito sa thread. Try to ask others.
Madaming software or technique pa na mas madali, you have to make some research nga lang.
Try to check iyon file na ini-upload ko sa yahoo groups...original sound lahat yun from Yamaha PSR-2000 in mp3 format na. :)

Bien

Guys!
Take time to listen to my version of the Panalanging Maging Bukas-Palad.
It's a very simple orchestration where I got rid of percussions. It's somewhat meditative.
I use it as accompaniment for the choral arrangement made by Joel Navarro for the Ateneo College Glee Club.
Hope you may find it useful too.
I posted it using my e-mail username rghebron and is posted on the bpocc onliners group.

vengie_vidal,
Welcome sa BP boards. You maybe referring to the bponliners e-groups. Well you have to be on a "regular" status to be able to be invited in the groups. Then pag regular ka na, post your request here. Make sure lang na you do not SPAM POST para maging regular agad, we would check you posts if these are "discussion" related

Niknok: Hello, Samaritan2001... request for midi files can either be coursed via Request Media Section or via PM. In your case, you can PM (private message) the said person. Thank you!
Hello, onliners!
To avoid further confusion, we will be closing this thread since it is more likely mistaken as the thread where we can "share" files like what you can see dun sa mga naunang posts sa Page 1 and so on...
Request for Midi files and other files should still be posted in the Request Section.
But if you would like to discuss particular songs of BP (except anything which has something to do with file sharing) feel free to start a new thread.
If you would also want a specific discussion about midi and how it works, (again, except "midi sharing"), then feel free to start a new thead as well.
Thank you for your understanding!
