Hmmm.... I would recommend "The Gospel of John"...

Gusto ko rin sana yung "The Greatest Story Ever Told" pero there were many theological objections to this movie...

And since, Catholic movies naman ang title nito (thereby not limited to Jesus, Mary and the saints), I also would like to recommend "The Mission." :)

EDIT:
I may have to say na "The Gospel of John" is not that really "Catholic" as being produced by the Catholic Church... :) I checked when I was prodded by hindsight... :)

Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ" na lang sana, pero Mel Gibson is not really "that" Catholic as we commonly know of for he is a Traditionalist Catholic (check Wiki na lang po.)
:)

"The Mission" I guess is a valid recommendation... :)

And lastly, ano ba ang qualifications mo for a movie to be "Catholic"?

"The Story of Jesus", maganda po ito lalo na para sa mga bata.

Mel Gibson is not really "that" Catholic as we commonly know of for he is a Traditionalist Catholic (check Wiki na lang po.)

He's still a Catholic. Traditionalism is a movement within the Church, not a sect. At any rate it has nothing to do with the Catholicity of his "Passion" movie (which IMO is as Catholic as any film can get).

My personal recommendations:

- A Man for All Seasons (about St. Thomas More)
- Becket (about St. Thomas Becket)

(Yes I realize they're both about saints named Thomas, but that's just a coincidence. Both films are good.)

Here's my list of good Catholic movies and documentaries reposted from a Flickr (R) group:

1. THE MYSTERIES OF THE HOLY ROSARY (Fr. Patrick Peyton of the Family Rosary Crusade) -- Eto na siguro ang pinaka-ultimate movie na pang Semana Santa. Tipong pag pinanood mo ito ngayon, magtatanong ka: "Semana Santa na ba?" kasi miski noong araw pa, according to my lola and my papa, pag daw Good Friday, eto lang daw ang pinalalabas sa TV. Tsaka pinapalabas din ito sa mga probinsya in lieu of the Sinakulo.

2. KRISTO (Matt Ranillo) -- Eto naman yung isa pang phenomenal movie about the Life of Christ, na may Filipino twist. It shows the Life of Christ in a pre-hispanic setting, with the Guardias Civil as Soldados Romanos. It also has been a Filipino Holy Week staple, like the Mysteries of the Holy Rosary.

3. BROTHER SUN, SISTER MOON (Graham Faulkner as St. Francis, directed and script by Franco Zeffirelli) -- The story of the "Perfect Image of Christ".

4. JESUS CHRIST, SUPERSTAR (Andrew Lloyd Webber, Tim Rice) -- This is the phenomenal Musical (may movie din nito) about the last week of Jesus. It also tells the stuggle of Judas to go along with Jesus in his last week. If you're a Traditional Catholic, this is not for you kasi may controversy daw ito na hindi daw isinama ang Resurrection which, according to the conservative Christians, eh "unacceptable".

5. DIVINE MERCY SA BUHAY NI SISTER FAUSTINA (Donita Rose and Christopher de Leon) -- A movie about the life of the Apostle of the Divine Mercy: Saint Faustina Kowalska of the Blessed Sacrament. Her trials and sufferings, as well as her revelations of the messages of the Divine Mercy. Ang pinakagusto kong eksena dito eh yung nagpakita si Jesus dun sa condemned prisoner for death, giving him the gift of the Divine Mercy.

6. THE CROSS, THE CRAB, AND SAINT FRANCIS XAVIER (Jesuit Communications Foundation) -- Eto naman yung story ni Saint Francis Xavier and his voyages for the mission of evangelization. And believe it or not, ang nagkukuwento eh isang talangka! What's the catch with the title? Well, it's about the miracle of St. Francis Xavier, nung nahulog sa dahat yung crucifix niya.

7. NO GREATER LOVE: THE STORY OF RICHIE FERNANDO, SJ (Jesuit Communications Foundation) -- one of the biggest and greatest projects of JesCom, this is a documentary on the life of the hero of the Cambodians: Richie Fernando, SJ. He was the one who saved an entire class by dropping on the grenade thrown by a delinquent student. His cause for Beatification is now on its process.

8. CUARESMA (Fernando Zialcita et al., Bookmark, Inc.) -- I love this documentary. Pinapanood ko ito sa mga taga-Legion of Mary pag Holy Week sa bahay as part of my film-viewing and "Pregon de Semana Santa" (parang symposium, based on the assemblies and symposia of the Hermandades of Seville, also of the same name).

9. MACARENA: CAMINO DE ESPERANZA (Hermandad de La Macarena) -- This is a documentary of the Hermandad de Macarena about the queen of Seville: Virgen de La Esperanza MAcarena. I got my copy from a friend who went to Seville to see the Holy Week Celebration. Dun din makikita yung exclusive videos ng Coronacion Canonica ng Virgen, as well as old photos of the Macarena during the Spanish Civil War.

10. MARIAN APPARITIONS OF THE 20th CENTURY (Richardo Montalban, Center for Peace) -- Although medyo hindi related sa Semana Santa, maganda rin itong panoorin pag Holy Week kasi we can see the Virgin Mary's messages in an hour's span. Echatological, though.

11. THERESE (Lindsay Younce as Therese Martin, Leonardo Defillipis, Director) -- The story of the "Greatest Saint of Modern TImes", ipinapakita rito ang buhay ni St. Therese, in a very dramatic but inspiring rendition. Magandang ka-partner nito eh yung autobiography niya plus some of her letters addressed to the different people who sought her counsels. Argh!

12. DON BOSCO (Leandro Castellani) -- Eto naman eh istorya ni St. John Bosco. I watched this over HBO nung Miyerkules Santo, and got myself a copy from the Salesians.

13. MOTHER THERESA OF CALCUTTA (Hallmark Productions) Story ito ni Mother Theresa. Well... Almost. It showed the moment in Mother Theresa's life wherein she has to choose between her life as a nun, teaching to well-to-do children of Calcutta, or to live amongs the destitutes. It's a very good movie for Holy Week.

Di ko natapos panoorin ito, pero so I heard, "Maging Akin Muli" (produced by the JesCom, starring Marvin Agustin and Nestor Trinidad) is a good movie daw about one's calling. Marvin Agustin played the role of a seminarian during his last year as a deacon (i.e. before being ordained). Marami siyang na-encounter na challenges na sumubok sa desisyon nya na magpari...including meeting his former girlfriend who later blamed him for the miseries she experienced after he told her that he wants to become a priest :)

"Ben Hur" is supposedly a movie about a person's conversion to Christianity..during the Roman Empire. Adaptation ito ng isang novel at---higit sa lahat---isa sa tatlong pelikulang nanalo ng pinakamaraming Oscar Awards (including Best Film) :) Needless to say, pinupuri ito maging ng mga hindi-Katolikong movie critics (now THAT is something :D )

@Paulus Magnus: Meron dating parang (photo-)exhibit about Bro. Richie sa National Shrine of the Divine Mercy sa Marilao, Bulacan.

"KINGDOM OF HEAVEN" ni Ridley Scott..hindi cya particularly catholic or even religious film pero yung message nya e transcends religious boundaries..the film is about the Crusades and the siege of Jerusalem during the 11th century.ahem..highly recommended.
