Thanks very much, Super Moderator Jon2.

Ash Wednesday

• Liturgical Color: Violet (Reddish shades)
• Ash Wednesday is not a fixed date.
• Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent. Lent is 40 days of preparing for Easter. Lent is about preparing (1) catechumens—yung mga magiging bagong-bagong Katoliko—for their baptism, during the Easter Vigil, and (2) the faithful—to celebrate the Paschal mystery (Passion, Crucifixion, Resurrection).
• Ash Wednesday is a day of Fasting and Abstinence. Fasting (for 18 y/o to not yet 60) means when you total your food consumption for that day, equivalent lang siya to one full meal. Abstinence (for 14 y/o and above) means eating no meat (chicken, pork, beef).
• During Lent, walang Gloria, except Feb 22 (Chair of St. Peter) and Mar 19 (St. Joseph), and normally Mar 25 (Annunciation). However, March 25, 2016 is Good Friday, kaya ililipat for this year 2016 ang Annunciation to April 4.
• Walang flowers sa altar except 4th Sunday of Lent.
• Musical instruments may be played only to give the necessary support to the singing human voice. Turn down the volume. Musical instruments during Lent should be played to the bare minimum, just enough to sustain ang boses ng tao. Baka nga mas mahusay pa ang a cappella. Please be reminded that the choir is a liturgical music leader—lead the congregation to sing TOGETHER with you. Do not alienate the congregation; do not perform as if you’re in a concert.
• Instrumental solos are bawal kapag Lent. Silence is far better during the season of Lent.
• During service songs if you can apply these to the tune of pasyon, that would be more in keeping with enculturation.

E:

1. Alay sa Kapwa (Esteban, Hontiveros)
2. Buksan ang Aming Puso (Tinio, Hontiveros)
3. Halina, Lumapit sa Akin (Isidro, Que)
4. Pananagutan (Hontiveros)

1. Save Us, O Lord (Dufford)

On Ash Wednesday, walang penitential rite.
As stated above, walang Glory to God/Luwalhati.

The readings are always the same set, (whether years A, B, or C).

1R: Joel 2:12-18 is about rending your hearts.

Ps 51 Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned. (English)
Poon, Iyong kaawaan kaming sa ‘Yo’y nagsisuway. (Filipino)

2R: 2 Cor 5:20 Paul exhorts us to be reconciled to God.

Walang Alleluia. You may use the verse before the Gospel, or some suitable piece.

G: In Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18, Jesus commands us to do almsgiving, to pray, and to fast.
1. Do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing when you give alms.
2. When you pray, do not do it with the intention of being publicly praised.
3. Do not look gloomy when you fast.

Ashes are blessed and imposed after the homily. For pastoral reasons, some priests move this to the last portion of the Mass. It is saddening to know that some people leave immediately after the Distribution of Ashes. That’s why some priests move this.
These ashes are of palms blessed in last year’s Palm Sunday. One of the following formulas is used:

English:
• “Repent and believe in the Gospel.”
O kaya
• “Remember that thou are dust, and to dust you shall return.”

Blessing and Imposition of Ashes (BIA):

1. Likhain Mong Muli (Alejo, Francisco)
2. Awit ng Paghilom (Aquino)
3. Sino Kayo? (Javellana, Que) best choice. “hinubog sa lupa’t kahinaan”
4. Actually, C songs kung hindi gagamitin sa communion, may be used.

1. Father, Marcy (Dufford)
2. Hosea (Norbet)
3. Without Seeing You (Haas) Stanza 1 only
4. C songs may be used if they won’t be used for communion.

Walang Creed.

O:

1. Alay Kapwa (Tinio, Hontiveros)
2. Kung ‘Yong Nanaisin (Francisco)
3. Nang Buo Kong Buhay (Alejo, Hontiveros)

1. Now We Remain (Haas) Stanza 4 ang priority.
2. Take Our Bread (Wise) Stanza 2 ang priority.
3. To Be Your Bread (Haas)
4. We Remember (Haugen) Stanza 2 ang priority.

C:

1. Ang Kaluluwa Ko’y Nauuhaw (Isidro, Que)
2. Awit sa Mahal na Puso ni Hesus (Isidro, Que)

12. Kaibigan, Kapanalig (Ofrasio, Hontiveros)
13. Pagbabalik (Alcaraz, Francisco)
14. Saan Kami Tutungo (Macalinao, Hontiveros)
15. Sino Kayo? (Javellana, Que)
16. E3 if not used as entrance song
17. Any of the BIA songs which weren’t sung

1. Now We Remain (Haas) if not used as O
2. Only This I Want (Schutte)

5th Sunday of Lent

• Liturgical Color: Violet (Reddish shades)
• Walang Gloria.
• Walang flowers sa altar.
• Musical instruments may be played only to give the necessary support to the singing human voice. Turn down the volume. Musical instruments during Lent should be played to the bare minimum, just enough to sustain ang boses ng tao. Baka nga mas mahusay pa ang a cappella. Please be reminded that the choir is a liturgical music leader—as such, lead the congregation to sing TOGETHER with you. Do not alienate the congregation; do not perform as if you’re in a concert.
• Instrumental solos are bawal kapag Lent. When movement of people ends (such as in processional songs like entrance, offertory, communion, ang organist ay dapat hindi na tumutugtog ng instrumental alone kung tapos na ang galaw ng mga tao. Itigil na ang pagtugtog. Silence is far better during the season of Lent.
• During service songs if you can apply these to the tune of pasyon, that would be more in keeping with enculturation.

E:
1. Alay sa Kapwa (Esteban, Hontiveros) Prioritize Stanza 2.
2. Buksan ang Aming Puso (Tinio, Hontiveros)

Ps 126 The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy.

2R: Philippians 3:8-14 is about continuing the pursuit toward the ultimate goal, Christ Jesus.

Walang Alleluia. You may use the verse before the Gospel, or some suitable piece.

G: John 8:1-11 is about the woman caught in the very act of committing adultery. “Go, and from now on, do not sin anymore.”

Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion (Year C)

Liturgical Color: Red.

I. Misang may Prusisyon sa simula

Sa Misa na una (whether Saturday evening or on the Sunday itself), magkakaroon ng Prusisyon. Despite the plurality of Masses throughout the day in many parishes, isang beses lang po ang prusisyon. Wala nang prusisyon sa iba pang Misa on this day.

In the event that your place is too small a chapel, or there are too few ministers, even at least some parts of the liturgy can’t and won’t be sung, or the congregation is not sufficiently large, celebrating the rites of Holy Week is discouraged.

Going back, the faithful take part in the procession, singing and waving branches of palms in their hands. The priest and his ministers do the same. The branches are blessed so that they may be carried in procession, and be devoutly kept at home later to call to mind the victory of Christ as celebrated by today’s procession.

Reading: Luke 19:28-40

Jesus instructs two apostles to go get the donkey that they shall find in the next village. These two do so and put their cloaks above the donkey. Riding that, Jesus triumphantly enters Jerusalem, as people lay their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches and lay them down and sing “Hosanna to the Son of David.”

Songs for the Procession:

1. Hosana sa Anak ni David (Parungao)
2. Osana ang aming awit (Bautista)
3. Hosanna to the Son of David (Gibbons)
4. Hosanna to the Son of David (Weelkes)
5. Hosanna to the Son of David (Moe)
6. Hosanna Son of David (Schutte)
7. Let Heaven Rejoice (Dufford) “Let children proclaim to every land, ‘Hosanna to our King!’”
8. Hosanna Filio David

There are many other similar versions which are acceptable too.

Consider the processional song as your entrance song to acknowledge that the Mass did not begin at the Church, but at the place where the people had congregated. Huwag maging pasaway. (Besides, much later pa kailangan pumunta sa choir place dahel wala namang Entrance Song nor Gloria). Pagdating ninyong mga nag-prusisyon sa simbahan, opening prayer (collect) na, and then First Reading na kaagad. That is to say, walang Sign of the Cross, penitential rite, sprinkling of the congregation with holy water. The usual parts of the Mass follow.

II. Misang Walang Prusisyon sa Simula

Walang flowers sa altar.

To commemorate the Lord’s entry into Jerusalem, apart from the procession, the Roman Missal proposes a solemn entry, to be enacted whenever it is not possible to hold a procession outside of the Church. This solemn entry is to take place before the Main Mass, with the faculty of repeating it before another Mass which is habitually celebrated with a large gathering of the people. The Roman Misal also proposes a simple entry to be performed at other Masses. For all other Masses during the day, the Hosanna songs above shall serve as your entrance song, and the common order of the parts of the Mass follows.

Turn down the volume. Minimize the musical instruments. Musical instruments during Lent should give only the bare minimum, or just the necessary support to the singing. Sustenance lang. Baka nga mas maganda pa ang kalabasan kung mag-a capella tayo. Kailangan maramdaman and ma-realize ng mga taong assembled that this season is very distinct from other liturgical seasons, most especially Easter, and one way of doing that is ibang style ng ating pagiging liturgical music leader, at hindi mga nagco-concert.

Instrumental solos are bawal kapag Lent. When movement of people ends (such as in the processional songs in entrance, preparation of the gifts, communion), immediately find an ending for the processional song. Find an end. Tumahimik. Give the congregation an opportunity for silent reflection. Yung ibang parishes nga, tinitigil talaga yung kanta, no matter what part they are in, when movement of people ceases. Huwag nang maglagay ng 2nd communion song. People should be made to reflect so they won’t chit-chat. Silence is far better during the season of Lent.

During service songs, if you can apply these to the tune of pasyon, the congregation will surely notice, and thereby realize that this is a distinct season altogether. For example, if you can sing si Kristo ay namatay into the tune of pasyon...ginawa yan minsan sa parish. Also, you're encouraging enculturation.

Walang Sign of the Cross, Penitential Rite, Sprinkling of the congregation with holy water.

Walang Gloria. Holy Thursday na ulit maririnig ang Gloria. Magfa-fasting tayo from the mirth of the angels when they sang Glory to God in the highest.

1R: Isaiah 50:4-7: I have not rebelled, and I have not turned back. I gave My back to those who beat Me, my cheeks to those who plucked my beard; My face I did not shield from buffets and spitting.

RP: 22 “My God, my God, why have You abandoned Me?”

2R: Philippians 2:6-11: Though Christ Jesus was in the form of God, He did not regard equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, He emptied Himself, taking in the form of a slave.

Do not omit these readings before the Gospel.

Walang Alleluia. Use the Verse Before the Gospel. Consult the thread about Lenten Gospel Acclamation in lieu of alleluia.

You might be asked to speak out a few lines from the Gospel reading. Make sure may kopya tayo at least ng Gospel reading, and know which parts are your assignment, and when you will say these sentences. Do not try to play background music during the reading of the Passion.

For the spiritual good of the faithful, it is appropriate that the narrative of the passion be read in its entirety—even if it is very long.

The narrative of the Lord’s passion is read without candles, incense, initial greeting, or marking of the book with the sign of the cross. It is read by the deacon, or kung walang deacon, by a priest. It may be read even by lay readers. Ito yung part na may sagutan. The part of Christ’s words is reserved if possible to the priest.

G: Luke 22:14 – 23:56 This is about the Last Supper, the argument about who is the greatest, Jesus predicting about Peter’s denial, about the traitor, the agony in the garden, the arrest, the Judas kiss, Peter’s denial, the trials, Crucifixion, Simon of Cyrene, daughters of Jerusalem, and Death of Jesus.

All will kneel for a short time after the words, “’Father into Your hands I commend my spirit,’ and when he had said this he breathed his last.”

At the end is said, “The Gospel of the Lord” as usual. However, the deacon or priest ought not to kiss the Gospel Book.
