Songs for Easter Sunday, Posted 11.02.25 #1
SONG LINE UP SUGGESTIONS

Apr 24, 2011 (Easter Sunday)

Liturgical color: White;

In selecting songs for Easter, I do encourage you to choose songs that have the word Alleluia/Aleluya in the lyrics, coz hallelujah is so characteristic of this “solemnity of solemnities.” Hallelujah expresses so much festiveness it should be maximized.

Filipino:
Entrance: Magsiawit sa Panginoon (Isidro & Que)

Sequence: Victimae Paschali Laudes (Wipo) You may sing this up to and including May 1, 2011, the 2nd Sunday of Easter.

Today there would be no Profession of the Creed; instead: the Renewal of Baptismal Vows. After the vows, singing is typical.

Renewal of Baptismal vows: Isang Pananampalataya (Santos & Hontiveros)

P of the G:
1. Unang Alay
2. Tinapay ng Buhay for Offertory is justified today.

Acclamation:
1. Sa Krus Mo at Pagkabuhay (Francisco)
2. Si Kristo ay namatay
3. Si Kristo’y namatay (Hontiveros)

Amen: Dakilang Amen (Francisco)

Communion:
1. Pag-ibig Mo, Ama (Macalinao & Hontiveros)
2. Pagsibol (Aquino)
3. Papuri (Arboleda, Salazar & Agatep)
4. Tubig ng Buhay (Valdellon)

Recessional:
1. Humayo’t Ihayag (Francisco, Catalan & Go)
2. E1 if not used as entrance song
3. Ito ang bagong araw (Isidro & Ramirez)
4. E2 if not used as entrance song
5. O Bayan ng Diyos (Aquino)

English/Latin:

Entrance:
1. Let Heaven Rejoice (Dufford) Prioritize stanza 3.
2. Water of Life (Haas)
3. Hallelujah
4. Sing a new song

Sequence: Victimae Paschali Laudes (Wipo) You may sing this up to and including May 1, 2011, the 2nd Sunday of Easter.

Renewal of Baptismal Vows: Vidi Aquam

P of the G: One Bread, One Body (Foley)

Communion:
1. As Water to the thirsty (Haas)
2. Far Greater Love (Go & Francisco)
3. Here in this Place (Haas)
4. I am the Bread of Life (Toolan)
5. In my heart (Francisco)
6. Without seeing you (Haas). Actually, this is an okay song for the whole of Easter season. However, I do encourage you to reserve it more especially for the Sunday when the Gospel is about doubting Thomas. Maganda toh today, April 24, pero mas maganda ito on the 2nd Sunday of Easter.

Amen: Doxology (Dufford)

Lamb of God/Agnus Dei: Lamb of God litany (Schutte) Refrain, then Stanza 4, then Refrain.

2nd Sunday of Easter & Divine Mercy Sunday

Liturgical color: White

Readings:

1R: The First Reading for this Mass would not come from the Old Testament, but from the Book of Acts of the Apostles in the New Testament—specifically Acts 2:42-47. The community who made up the believers in Jesus Christ shared material necessities amongst themselves, and praised God together.

2R: 1 P 1:3-9 is about praising God the Father for His Son Jesus Christ Who saved our souls.

SONG LINE UP SUGGESTIONS

May 8, 2011
3rd Sunday of Easter

Liturgical color: White

Readings:
1R: The First Reading for this Mass would not come from the Old Testament, but from the Book of Acts of the Apostles in the New Testament—specifically Acts 14:22-23. This is about Peter’s speech to the believers in the Risen Lord Jesus Christ.

RP: 16 Lord, You will show us the path to life.

2R: You were redeemed by the precious blood of Jesus Christ.

G: Luke 24:13-35 tells about Jesus and the two disciples on the Road to Emmaus. After the Resurrection, two disciples were on the road to Emmaus, and Jesus appeared to them, but they did not recognize Him. Jesus talks with them, and after a supper that was very much like the last supper, the two disciples realize that it was Jesus to whom they were talking to, but Jesus disappeared. The two disciples go back to Jerusalem and tell the other apostles about their experience of seeing and actually talking to the Risen Lord.

If you serve in a Mass na umuuntog sa Angelus/Regina Coeli (either before or after the Mass) examples: 5, 6 AM, 11 AM, 12 NN, 5 PM, 6 PM, try to work out an arrangement with the commentators and/or lectors and the choirs: Will the Regina Coeli be said or sung? If it will be sung, then sing for

English: Hangad’s Queen of Heaven, Rejoice

Filipino: Reyna ng Langit (Hontiveros): BP in Tinapay ng Buhay Album.

Filipino Mass:

Options:

E:
1. Magsiawit sa Panginoon (Isidro & Que) "Magsiawit kayo sa Panginoon; ALELUYA!"
2. Isang Pananampalataya (Santos & Hontiveros)
3. Pag-aalaala (Francisco)

P of the G:
1. Pag-aalay (Francisco)

Acclamation:
1. Sa Krus Mo at Pagkabuhay (Francisco)
2. Si Kristo ay namatay
3. Si Kristo’y namatay (Hontiveros)

14. Sa ‘Yong Piling (Castro & Villaroman)
15. Tubig ng Buhay (Valdellon)

I know it’s also Mother’s Day on this day, so some would be looking for songs to be used during the blessing of moms—songs that are dedicated either to the BVM, or at least heartwarming or touching songs for Mom. But consider this: wouldn’t it be more in keeping with the liturgical calendar if instead of Mother’s Day, moms would be blessed on January 1, The Solemnity of Mary Mother of God, i.e., rather than the commercial celebration that is Mother’s Day (2nd Sunday of May)? Cguro Marian song for a recessional song, pero walang blessing para ma-reserve sa Jan 1. Opinion ko lang toh.

English Mass:

E:
1. Come with Praise (Schutte)
2. For You are my God (Foley) This song is based on RP 16.

4. Play before the Lord (Dufford). Stanza 2 ang priority. "Offering Him our joyful hearts, joining in endless praise. Alleluia (4x) joining in endless praise."
5. Sing a new song (Schutte). Don’t forget to replace “Yahweh’s people” to “O God’s people.” "Singing Alleluia..."
6. Water of Life (Haas)
7. Sing to the Mountains (Dufford)
8. Throughout all time (Haas). Pero alam nyo, maganda ito iterno natin sa Recessional Song: I will sing forever (Francisco)!

Mayroong Glory to God at Alleluia by now.

P of the G:
1. One Bread, One Body (Foley)
2. Earthen Vessels (Foley)

Acclamation: Christ has died, alleluia! (Wise)

10. Now we remain (Haas). Admittedly Lenten, but the verses reflect probably the thoughts of the two disciples.
6th Sunday of Easter

Liturgical color: White

Readings:

1R: Acts 8:5-8, 14-17: The First Reading for this Mass would not come from the Old Testament, but from the Book of Acts of the Apostles in the New Testament. RP: 66 Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.

2R: If the action is parallel to God’s will, to do good is better than to do wrong—even if one will suffer for doing the good.

G: If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. Whoever keeps My commandments is the one who loves Me.

5. Actually, almost any Marian song. May is a Marian month. As this would be the last Sunday of May, it's only sensible to make it grand. That is, unless you'd be actually having your Sagala on May 31, a weekday. Maybe Dios te Salve para alam na nung mga taong pupunta sa prusisyon?

Ascension Sunday
Liturgical color: White

Sa maraming bansa, Holy Day of Obligation ito. (Not in Phils though.) This is generally celebrated 40 days after Easter Sunday. Dahel pumapatak ang Easter Sunday sa araw ng Linggo (What?!?@#$%), necessarily papatak ang Ascension sa araw ng Huwebes. However, AFAIK, in Canada and the Pinas, this feast is transferred to the following Sunday. In Nigeria, the precept of attending Mass on this day is transferred to the following or preceding Sunday. In Scotland, this feast, when it falls on a Saturday, no obligation to attend Mass is attached for that year in that nation.

Readings:

1R: Luke, the acknowledged author of Acts, in 1:1-11 writes to Theophilus about Jesus’ ascension. Ipila ko na lang yung mga consequential lines:
1. Jesus showed to the apostles that He is alive.
2. He was with them for 40 days after His Resurrection.
3. Jesus instructed them not to leave Jerusalem but wait for the Father’s promise. “You will be baptized with the Holy Spirit within a few days.”
4. It is not for us to know the time and the steps that the Father has fixed b His own authority.
5. You will be my witnesses... even to the ends of the earth.
6. The Ascension narrative.

RP: 47 God mounts His throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets for the Lord.

2R: Eph 1:17-23
1. May you know how great is the glory that God sets apart for His saints.
2. God the Father revealed His almighty power in Christ. He had Him sit at His right hand in heaven. God put all things under the feet of Christ, and set Him above all things as head of the Church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.

G: Matthew 28:16-20.
1. Jesus told the Eleven to go up a mountain in Galilee.
2. Jesus said, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Go, therefore, and make disciples from nations. Baptize them in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teach them to fulfil all that I have commanded you. I am with you always until the end of this world.”

If you serve in a 6 AM, 12 NN or 6 PM mass when there would be Angelus/Regina Coeli before or after the Mass, try to work out an arrangement with the commentators and/or lectors and the choirs: Will the Regina Coeli be said or sung? If it will be sung, then sing for

1. All my days (Schutte & Murray)
2. I will sing forever (Francisco)
3. In my heart (Francisco)
4. E1 if not used as entrance song
5. Life forever more (Ellerton & Francisco)

I know; June is traditionally the month of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. But hold your horses on such songs as Mahal na Puso, No Mas Amor, and Your Heart Today. Curiously, for this year, the Feast of the Sacred Heart, which is celebrated on the Friday after Corpus Christi, falls in July and not in June.

SONG LINE UP SUGGESTIONS

Pentecost Sunday
Liturgical color: Red

This is celebrated 50 days after Easter Sunday. In your choice of songs, it’s recommended to mix languages, that is to say, intersperse the songs in languages that the congregation is more or less familiar with. For instance, why don’t you sing some part of the song in Latin, some in English, some in Filipino, some in your provincial dialect if you have one. This is more reflective of how the apostles were able to speak in various tongues to their hearers after the Pentecost.

"...began to speak other languages, as the Spirit enabled them to speak...each heard them speaking in his own language..."

This is probably why the trite Come Holy Spirit has a Halina Espiritu Santo in it hehehe.

The first option is thus multiple languages in one song, at least in the processional songs, because there is more room as such are longer. I don't know if it will be as easily done in the non-processional songs, as these are naturally much shorter. A second option could be that of using different languages for many songs. well at least sa mga processional. That is to say, for example, a Latin entrance song, an English offertory song, a Filipino communion song, and the recessional song in your provincial dialect if you got one.

Readings:

1R: Luke, the acknowledged author of Acts, in 2:1-11 writes about the descent of the Holy Spirit.

RP: 104 Lord, send out Your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth.

2R: 1 Corinthians 12:3-13 is about us being gifted; each one is unique and special to do great things for the glory of God. We each have different gifts.

G: John 20:19-23 is about Jesus appearing to the apostles after His Resurrection. The consequential lines are:

1. Peace be with you.
2. As the Father has sent Me, so I send you.
3. Receive the Holy Spirit.
4. Those whose sins you forgive are forgiven. Those whose sins you retain are retained.

Please consider also that this day is our country’s independence day. Don’t forget to sing songs that are makabayan too.

English: Hangad’s Queen of Heaven, Rejoice

Filipino: Reyna ng Langit: BP in Tinapay ng Buhay Album.

Songs:

Para sa natatanging Linggong ito, I think it’s better not to separate the songs into two language sets as I normally do.

E: Dami ng options:

1. Bayan, magsiawit na (Aquino) Stanza 3 ang priority
2. Bayan, umawit (Borres, Baltazar & Francisco)
3. Pag-aalaala (Francisco)
4. Pagbubunyi (Borres & Francisco)
5. Sa Hapag ng Panginoon (Morano & Francisco)
6. Send us Your Spirit (Haas)
7. Come Holy Spirit
8. Veni Creator Spiritus
9. Send Your Spirit (Hangad)
10. Pagbabasbas (Javellana, Arboleda & Francisco) "Pumanaog ka" is so Descent.

Sequence in lieu of Alleluia:

1. Veni Sancte Spritus
2. Liwanag ng aming Puso (Tagle & Hontiveros)

O:

1. Isang Pagkain, 1 Katawan, 1 Bayan (San Pedro)
2. One Bread, One Body (Foley) swak sa 2R
3. Take our Bread (Wise) Stanza 2 ang priority.

C: Dami pwede pagpilian.

1. Kapayapaan (Aquino)
2. Likhain Mong Muli (Alejo & Francisco) Stanza 2 ang priority
3. Liwanagan Mo, Hesus (Aquino)
4. Breath of God (Hatch & Francisco)
5. The Presence of Jesus (Haas) Stanza 5 ang priority
6. Spirit of God (Haugen)
7. Spirit of God (Winter)
8. Prayer of St. Francis (Temple) “Make me a channel of your PEACE”
9. Prayer for Peace (Haas)
10. One little candle
11. Here I am, Lord (Schutte)
12. E10 if not used as entrance song.

R:

1. E1 if not used as entrance song
2. Humayo’t Ihayag(Francisco, Catalan & Go)
3. O Bayan ng Diyos (Aquino)
4. E3 if not used as entrance song
5. Pilgrim’s Theme (Go & Francisco)
6. We are Yours
7. Live by the Spirit
8. Recessional Hymn
9. I will sing (Francisco). For this occasion of Pentecost, I recommend singing the, uhh, African-chant-sounding, uhh, syllables, mga ungols, at the introit, something I've never understood, as these are so much like "speaking in tongues." Thus, there's a good chance that people in the congregation will associate it with the HS and think you guys are so inebriated with the HS that the choir is speaking in tongues.

But I recall something (not official though) na sa Philippine Church, the Eastertide is extended to Trinity...

Can someone please confirm kung kasama ang dalawang kapistahan sa Easter. Salamat
