Give Thanks to the Lord (Psalm 118)

Lyrics

REFRAIN
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good!
His faithfulness is forever.
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good!
His love endures forevermore.

I
I shall not fear when foes abound.
My God, my Savior is near.
I shall not trust in mortal things,
but trust in the ways of the Lord. (REFRAIN)

II
You are my rock. I give you thanks,
for you are my strength and my song.
I shall not die, but blessed, I live,
proclaiming the words of the Lord. (REFRAIN)

III
This is the day the Lord has made,
so let us be glad and rejoice.
He's given us a light that saves.
O blest is the name of the Lord. (REFRAIN)

Enveloped by hardship, overcome by trials, we might see no reason to sing. Yet the Psalmist reminds us that God's goodness cannot be eclipsed by earthly troubles. God's love and fidelity outlast our tribulations, and God's salvation causes us to rejoice.

"Give Thanks to the Lord" is a paraphrase of Psalm 118: 1, 8, 9, 11, 14, 17, 28 and 29. Psalm 118 is a song of joy for salvation. Psalm 118 is a common psalm for the Easter Season, which means it may be selected as a psalm during Easter liturgies. It may also be used for Advent and other times, when it matches the readings, or is quoted in the liturgy.

"Give Thanks to the Lord" is also an appropriate Entrance, Communion, or Recessional Song during any of these times.
