When We Eat This Bread

Lyrics

When we eat this Bread and drink this Cup,
we proclaim Your Death, O Lord,
until You come again,
until You come again,
we proclaim Your Death, O Lord.

The Memorial Acclamation brings to mind Christ's paschal mystery – His death and resurrection which we shall proclaim until He comes again. This plan of God to save humankind, which is beyond all human understanding, is revealed and faithfully carried out by Jesus Christ. This is the mystery of faith.

The Acclamation is a recent element of the Eucharistic Prayer, an innovation in the Roman Liturgy, having come into use with the Second Vatican Council. The new English translation offers three versions of the mystery of faith. The second version is presented here using a musical setting than can be applied to all three. The new translation drops the acclamation that has been popular since 1973: "Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again." That acclamation is not in the Latin typical edition. In the present translation, we use the form by which we address Christ directly
